Mata Viva Project |
07/08 |

The Mata Viva Program for Environmental Adjustment and Education is a BASF project launched by BASF Crop Protection Division which supported by agricultural cooperatives and rural growers is well positioned to further contribute to rural development and sustainable agriculture.
The extension of the Mata Viva reforestation program to Brazilian growers is being carried out by Espaço ECO Foundation, which was set up by BASF with the support of the German development agency GTZ. Espaço ECO Foundation seeks to promote sustainable development by transferring knowledge and technology in the areas of ecological efficiency, environmental education and reforestation. Its operations cover the whole Latin America region. The project is financially supported by DEG (Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH).
Since 1984, BASF has invested in the recuperation of the Rio Paraíba do Sul riparian forest, located around the Guaratinguetá Chemical Site area. The objective is to minimize any impacts to the local river, erosion and floods. BASF invested in the plantation of seedlings of several native forest species to build a heterogeneous area, thus building an ideal habitat for various animal species. Since 1984, about 128 hectares have been recuperated by more than 180 thousand seedlings. The increase of several animal species has been observed.
Since 2004, the "Mata Viva" project includes environmental education for students. The environmental education is provided via primary schools located around the involved cooperatives, thus expanding the knowledge acquired by educators and students of key agricultural issues such as climate, water, recycling, residues, reforestation and conservation of riparian forests.

In 2007, the project has been extended by the Crop Protection unit to agricultural cooperatives. Approximately 100 thousand seedlings are expected to be planted through to the end of 2008 in association with several agricultural cooperatives, thus recuperating 165 hectares of permanent preservation areas.
BASF has planned to recuperate until 2009 about 350 hectares in 35 rural properties located in 14 Brazilian towns, with more than 300 thousand seedlings of natural species planted in 2008 alone. Over the same period, this program is also positioned to qualify new professionals with a view to expanding its coverage.
