BASF Australia: New initiative to acquaint primary school children with natural sciences |
08/04 |

Colourfully dressed actors, chemistry experiments and loads of wide-eyed kids at Science Week in Victoria/Australia

What do chemistry and opera have in common? They´re often found far beyond young childrens´ imagination. As part of the Science Week in August 2004, BASF Australia initiated a first-ever event for children aged between 6 and 12 to demystify chemistry. In collaboration with The Song Room, a local group involved in music for kids, a performance was organized for primary school children from Springvale area.
In the show music theatre, comedy, magic and mime interweave with small scientific experiments, such as how superabsorbers absorb water. Listening to the show along with participating on stage and in the audience the kids easily loose their fears of contact.
Chemistry - as well as opera - is not necessarily part of the primary school curriculum. However an early introduction in a positive learning environment can only enhance the childrens´ awareness of both. Special Teachers´ Packs with follow-up ideas and information is available for all schools participating as well as some giveaways for the children.
