Protecting net: Interceptor

The launch of BASF's Interceptor mosquito nets offers long-lasting protection against diseases spread by insects. Interceptor nets provide fast knockdown of mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite. This prevents disease transmission to people sleeping under these nets.

Interceptor mosquito nets use Fendozin®, a unique textile-finishing product developed by BASF. Fendozin binds the WHO-approved insecticide Fendona® in a special coating to the fibers of the net. Fendona is slowly released and rapidly knocks down, kills or repels mosquitoes as they come into contact with the net. The net delivers this protection even after 20 washes.

Impregnated mosquito nets are one of the tools recommended by the World Health Organization in the battle against malaria. BASF's Interceptor nets performed successfully both in lab tests and in WHO-sponsored field tests. BASF recently passed another important step in the WHO authorization process and may now sell its nets with the WHO interim recommendation.

Interceptor nets will be sold mainly in Africa and major purchasers will be international organizations such as UNICEF, with which BASF already has good contacts. Total market demand for treated nets in the next two to five years is estimated to be more than 60 million nets per year.
