We are already in a position to produce the products vitamin B2, lysine and phytase by means of biotechnology. We are conducting intensive research into using microorganisms for the production of other products.

Optimizing microorganisms
In nature, microorganisms generally only synthesize enzymes and vitamins to cover their own requirements. We have succeeded in making them produce these products in far greater quantities. Initially, increasingly improved production strains were cultivated by means of random mutation of the microorganisms and continuous selection. This is termed classical strain development. In this manner, the productivity and yield of fermentation can be increased substantially.

| Cultures of microorganisms such as those in this petri dish can produce vitamins and enzymes simply and with reduced resource consumption. |

New paths - new methods
Today, in addition to this, we also use another procedure: metabolic engineering. This process enables us to modify the metabolism of the microorganisms in a targeted manner. Our objective is to further optimize transformation of substances in microorganisms. In addition to this, we would also like to eliminate possible bottlenecks, such as a lack of nutrients in the medium. We use a range of state-of-the-art analytical methods to investigate, for example, the interaction of genes in the microorganisms. This knowledge forms the basis for the targeted and efficient product synthesis and substance transformation in microorganisms.
