Fundamental statements

"A technology's attractiveness is derived from its potential to produce benefits for society and to meet the requirements of our customers. Biotechnology offers this opportunity."
Dr. Stefan Marcinowski, Member of the Board of Executive Directors of the BASF SE and Speaker of the Research Division

The value of technology

A modern technology cannot exist only in economic terms but it must also be sustainable. Sustainable means meeting the needs of the economic, ecological and social requirements of today's society without compromising the development opportunities of future generations.

Using opportunities responsibly

Biotechnology enables food products and valuable constituents to be produced in ways which save resources. It thus contributes to a sustainable economy. We want to utilize the manifold possibilities of biotechnology. In the process, we carefully consider opportunities and risks and make safety our top priority. We bear great responsibility here - but as a chemical company, this responsibility is nothing new to us.

Social acceptance of biotechnology is an important precondition for BASF. This is why constant dialog with the general public is a matter of course for us. We use our Xplore! laboratory for chemistry and biotechnology to introduce school children, for example, to this future technology.

In its 130-year existence, BASF has gained the trust of politicians and society through its responsible utilization of new technologies. We see ourselves as part of society and take concerns that have been expressed as well as possible risks extremely seriously. This is why we actively participate in public debate.

BASF acts in accordance with the ethical principles laid down by EuropaBio, the European Association for Bioindustries.
