Stable color thanks to formulation expertise
When added to water, beta carotene powder from BASF produces a strongly colored, stable colloidal solution. Because carotenoids are insoluble in water, such an effect can be achieved only if the substance is very finely divided. To do this, BASF produces minute particles of the carotenoid using a precipitation process. The particles are then surrounded by a protective colloidal coating, and the solution of colloid particles is spray-dried.

Astaxanthin gives farmed salmon its characteristic color
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that is used in salmon farming to give the flesh its pinkish-red color. Because fish cannot produce this pigment themselves, they need to obtain it via their food. BASF compared several production processes for astaxanthin in an eco-efficiency analysis. Chemical production was found to have a lower impact on the environment than fermentation or extraction from algae.

Prof. Dr. Michael Bockisch
Dr. Michael Bockisch is managing director of Unilever Holding and, since April 2005, managing director of Frozen Fish International GmbH. After graduating in chemistry, he was awarded a doctorate by the University of Cologne in 1974. Since 1983 he has been a lecturer at the Technical University in Berlin, where he was appointed honorary professor in 1993. Bockisch is also president of the German Society for Fat Science and board member of the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids (Euro Fed Lipid).

Professor Dr. Clare M. Hasler
Professor Dr. Clare Hasler has been working as Executive Director at the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California in Davis since February 2004. Dr. Clare Hasler was previously Assistant Professor in the department for nutritional science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, as well as Assistant Professor at the pharmaceutical-biological high school of the University of Illinois in Chicago. She has written over 50 pieces of work, including reports and articles, and is editor of the newly published book: "The Regulation of Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals - A Global Perspective."

Vitamin A, here shown in crystal form, is essential for human vision: A deficiency causes night blindness and ultimately results in loss of vision. Vitamin A is also important for normal human growth and development, and for the structure and functioning of the skin and mucous membranes. In developing countries and in children in particular, vitamin A deficiency is associated with an increased susceptibility to disease and higher mortality.
